You can drag me to hell anytime, Sam!

Finally watched Sam Raimi's Drag Me To Hell on dvd and i must say, i am pleasantly surprised. After his tenure directing the 3 Spidey flicks, I wasn't sure whether he could return to the zany yet scary early days of Evil Dead and Army of Darkness. But he has, and he has done it without breaking a sweat...

There is equal amounts gore, humour and thrills / scares for the average Raimi fan. Alison Lohman is pretty spot on as the average woman suddenly thrust into the extraordinary horrors of a gypsy curse, thanks to a vengeful old hag. Newcomer Dileep Rao was also cool as the clairvoyant / spiritualist who tries to helps her. Only Justin Long seemed a bit under-utilised, but hey, nothing is perfect! If only he had Bruce Campbell come in as the boyfriend or even better, as the bf's dad... now that would be just perfect!

Oh well, next time Brucie!

As for Sam, its a return to his low budget, independent and demonic past... and it's great to see. Watch out for the seance scene and see a direct homage to his Evil Dead roots. It is disturbingly funny, yet the comfort of a pillow cum shield may still be a good idea.

So check it out, if you dare, especially with Halloween around the corner (cue devillish laughter).
